On November 5, Southern Arizona entrepreneurs gathered for IdeaFunding, the annual workshop focused on providing resources for individuals interested in bringing a new product or service to market, early stage companies, and individuals within established firms exploring entrepreneurial new directions.
“This year’s conference focused on a topic that impacts everyone: funding,” says Sherry Hoskinson, director of the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship, one of the IdeaFunding partner organizations. “Funding is the lifeblood of any venture, and this year’s panelists offered exceptional insight for the attendees.”
The one-day workshop began with an overview of the funding landscape, then drilled down into specific options through breakout sessions on government grants and contracts, the equity financing market, and commercial loans.
The event also featured a keynote address by Susan Preston, the 2009 Anheuser-Busch Angel-in-Residence. Preston is general partner for the CalCEF Clean Energy Angel Fund. The IdeaFunding address kicked off her week-long residency at the McGuire Entrepreneurship Program, during which Preston met with the student venture teams to offer them feedback on their companies from an investor’s point of view.
“IdeaFunding had all the attributes of a successful enterprise: a strong need for our product, a sound business plan, a dedicated core of creative leaders working in sync with one another, a strong field general, and perfect execution,” says Larry Hecker, principal with Hecker & Muehlebach, PLLC, one of the event’s sponsors.
