On September 17, some 400 students, faculty, alumni, and friends of the Eller College gathered to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the College’s naming in honor of alumnus and entrepreneur Karl Eller.

Just prior to the barbeque, Eller College dean Paul Portney unveiled a bronze bust of Eller that has been installed on the west wall of McClelland Hall’s Estes Atrium. Ned Hutchison, a friend of Eller’s, sculpted the bust in his honor and donated it to the College.

Eller served up hotdogs and hamburgers to the students attending. He addressed the crowd briefly, sharing his dedication to the McGuire Center for Entrepreneurship, for which he provided the initial funding back in 1984. When Eller launched his billboard company in the 1960s, he recalls vowing that one day he’d be able to start a program that could educate entrepreneurs as they start their own businesses.

Jovert, steel band from Eller’s alma mater, Tucson High School, entertained the crowd, and Wilbur and Wilma were on hand to congratulate Eller. Students from the UA chapter of the American Advertising Federation designed and printed banners to honor Eller, which were also displayed at the event.
