Jamie Barmach, MBA '09,
combined his experience in
IT management with his Eller
MBA to form his own company,
JEB & Company.
President, JEB & Company
Midway through the Eller Evening MBA program in Scottsdale, Jamie Barmach was laid off.
“I was lucky,” he says, “because a unique opportunity came up for me to take on a three-year project with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.” Barmach formed his own firm, JEB & Company, and began applying the material he was learning at night to his own firm by day.
Barmach earned his undergraduate degree in political science at San Diego State University, but, he says, “My career path has always been on the technical side.”
He spent three years with Nielsen Media Research, then transitioned to IT support for a chain of fourteen car dealerships in Los Angeles. In 2005, he moved to Phoenix and joined an IT consulting firm that challenged him in new ways.
“I was thrown into a management position where I was responsible for growing a new division in the company,” he says. “I didn’t have formal business training at the time.” That was when he began looking at MBA programs in the Valley. He applied for the Eller College’s 18-month evening program and was accepted into the program’s inaugural cohort.
“Everything was brand new to me,” he says. “Especially accounting and finance — I had a huge learning curve.”
The learning curve was eased by the network he built in the program. “I made a lot of great friends in the program, and I feel like I can bounce ideas off of them.”
The firm he founded continues to grow. “We specialize in managed services,” he explains. “We provide an enterprise class IT department for small- to medium-sized business. We monitor, manage and maintain our clients’ networks for one monthly fixed fee and this allows them to focus on their business.” Barmach says that the company has recently taken on two new clients out of Virginia.
“Going forward, I want to be in a position to work on the business, not inside it. As cash flow allows me to hire more people, I see myself stepping out of the day-to-day client issues so I can focus on vision and direction.”
