Samantha Meis is your typical Eller student: involved, committed to her future, passionate about business.
She is your typical Eller student… and then some. Meis is a triple major, focusing on MIS and business management, and she has been accepted into the McGuire Entrepreneurship Program. She is involved with Delta Sigma Pi, Chain Gang Junior Honorary, the MIS Association, Zipperman Scholars, Eller ELITE, Greek life, and is also a member of the UA Honors College.
If you’re wondering how she does it all, don’t forget to add a helping of talent and motivation, because she also started her own online company in late 2009.
Meis is from Sioux City, Iowa, and came to Arizona in pursuit of great weather, access to the athletics program, a thriving social community, and the top-ranked Eller College. As a freshman, Meis credits faculty members such as Bill Neumann for sparking her interest in the MIS program.
“He encouraged me to get involved in the MIS community through MISA and Zipperman Scholars,” Meis said. “He also helped facilitate communication with a guest speaker, the CEO of Simpleview, that helped me secure an internship.”
While working at Simpleview, Meis realized her talent for search engine optimization and internet marketing. Later, she took these skills abroad to Barcelona, Spain, where she created a website for Joan Sibina, an architecture firm.
“Once I could do all of these things on my own, I knew it was time to move on and start my own company, so I could gain more value, get more diverse experiences, and have a self-determined flexible schedule.”
Since her father is a dentist and practice management consultant, she began research on the dental business field. Her research indicated that the dental field is behind in internet marketing, but that dentists are willing to get help when they realize they are falling behind, and that they enjoy sharing knowledge with one another. In December of 2009, at age 20, she held a social media marketing teleconference, inviting dentists from across the country. “After about an hour of sharing information, I pitched my services, got my first clients, and the rest, as they say, is history.”
Meis said, “I am currently a full-time student, and I am dedicated to fully living out my college years.” But when it comes time to graduate, she says she wants to focus on expanding her company, Dental Presence. Her goals include marketing her services more aggressively, hiring talented employees, and increasing her company’s suite of services.
Meis says that one of the most important aspects of her business is that it remains a company with “geographic freedom,” allowing her to serve anyone in the world from anywhere in the world.
“Since traveling and skiing are my passions, my dream job would allow me the time, flexibility, and geographic freedom to pursue my passions,” she said. “Basically, I already have my dream job, but I am always looking for new opportunities. I use my passions as a filter for new opportunities.”
