Eller MBA '13

Eller MBA ’13

Absar Kazmi grew up in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, a small city outside the capital of Islamabad. Kazmi attended the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) in Karachi, where he completed his degree in mechatronics engineering in 2002. While at NUST, Kazmi represented Pakistan in an international competition for mechatronics in Tokyo.

After graduating, Kazmi joined Engor, a chemical manufacturing business, which is one of the largest corporations in Pakistan. His undergraduate background allowed him to transition to a position as an electrical project engineer, a role he held for six years. In 2008, Kazmi switched to the energy sector and took a job at a private utility company that serves Karachi, the largest metropolitan area in Pakistan.

Kazmi began to explore furthering his education by looking into MBA programs midway through his first job at Engor. “I realized that I had reached a certain point where I would need a commercial understanding of the business, and an MBA would be that next step,” he said.

After getting married and starting a family in 2005, Kazmi renewed his search for his MBA, narrowing down his search to four schools. In 2011, he was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study in the United States. The Fulbright scholarship is competitive and seeks to foster cultural understanding though the use of education, and aim to inspire change in scholars’ home countries.

As a Fulbright Scholar, Kazmi focused on numerous opportunities in the energy sector, and hopes to bring back knowledge to help tackle the energy challenges in Pakistan upon completion of his degree.

Kazmi credits the Eller MBA program with helping to develop his financial skillset. Currently, he is concentrating in finance and entrepreneurship. “It is a mix that will allow me to identify and capture new opportunities and help develop business segments further,” he said.
