Winter Support Sparks Chain Reaction

Technology and Management. The support of Burgess and Patricia Winter continues to have invaluable impact through the Management and Technology Initiative, a collaboration between the Eller College of Management and the College of Engineering.

Funding from the Winters was instrumental in securing a three-year commitment from the Brown Family Foundation for scholarships and the creation of the Thomas R. Brown Chairs in Technology and Management.

In addition, the Initiative captured the attention of Arizona Public Service (APS), which recently chose to endow an APS Professorship in Technology Management in both the Eller College and the College of Engineering. Interim Dean and economics professor Ken Smith will serve as the first APS Professor of Technology Management for the Eller College.

The changes sparked by the Management and Technology Initiative are reflected in Eller College curricula as well, both with the creation of the Foundations of Business for Scientists course and the continued success of the Management of Technology Certificate Program.

Since first funded in 2002, the Management and Technology Initiative has sparked a chain reaction of support, development, and innovation. Eller College again extends its appreciation to the Winters for their far-reaching vision and support.

Smith Barney Renews Scholarship Commitment

In response to budget cuts and rising costs of education, the Smith Barney/Citigroup Foundation partnered with the Eller College to establish the Smith Barney Scholars Program in 2003.

The Foundation renewed their commitment to the program this fall, and the Eller College will select 4 new Smith Barney Scholars next month.

The program helps financially disadvantaged students from under-represented populations pay for tuition and program fees at the UA and the Eller College. Recipients must have earned excellent ratings in their Professional Admissions interviews, must maintain a 3.4 GPA, and must provide meaningful community service.

In addition to financial aid, the scholarship carries a commitment to provide real-world learning through mentorship and day-on-the-job experiences, giving Smith Barney Scholars insight into the company’s world of financial advising.

The 2003 Smith Barney Scholars were Brenda Ann Aguirre (Business Management ’05), Kim Thein Ho (Marketing ’05), Monica Inez Jimnez (Business Management ’05), and Kelly Kenneth Klein (Management Information Systems ’05).

Reap 2004 Tax Benefits with Year-End Giving

January 1 is just around the corner, and April 15, the deadline for filing tax returns, seems to follow impossibly close on its heels. Supporting the Eller College with a gift of cash, property, or other assets is a great way to realize tax savings for 2004.

The Eller College Dean's Excellence Fund
A check to the Dean's Excellence Fund supports a variety of scholarships, grants, programs, and projects not typically funded through the existing state budget.

When you factor in tax benefits, your gift costs less than its value to the College. For example, if you’re in the 28% tax bracket, a $1000 gift costs you $720 after the $280 tax benefit.

Giving with Securities
When you give securities you've held more than a year, you can deduct their full fair market value and avoid tax on appreciation. If your securities have depreciated, consider selling them to realize the capital loss tax benefit and donating the proceeds to the Eller College.

Seek Counsel
There are a number of other ways to support the Eller College, from donating life insurance policies or properties to creating an endowment. However, you must be aware of how gift dates are determined for tax purposes. For example, donations by check are dated by the postmark while gifts of real estate may be dated by the recording of the new deed.

For more information or to find out how you can best make and time your gift, contact Julie Miranda in the Eller College Office of Development: 520.621.2900 or jmiranda@eller.arizona.edu.
