Community service will be a significant requirement for Eller College Mitte Scholars. Habitat for Humanity is among the causes to which the Mitte Family is devoted. In June, Eller College advancement director Jim Moore joined Scott Mitte and Habitat for Humanity International on a building project in Durban, South Africa.

Scott invited Jim to participate in the South African build to explore the possibility of future Jimmy Carter Work Project opportunities for Mitte Scholars nationwide. Former United States President Jimmy Carter and his wife Roslyn are Habitat International's most notable volunteers. The Carters again lended a hand in the largest-ever Jimmy Carter Work Project. In the space of five days, 4,000 volunteers built a complex of 100 hundred homes for families in Durban.

bench from scrap lumber and it became an inspiration for the block manager of the Jimmy
Carter Work Project, who wants to build one for each home."The experience was meaningful in many ways," said Jim Moore. "I met people from all over the world and learned about their countries and their impressions of America. A sense of community was forged among those taking part in the build and now 100 families have the chance to turn a house into a home." "I also had a firsthand look at South Africa a country that is at a critical crossroad," he said. "Projects like this are bound to have a far-reaching effect. As young Mitte Scholars participate in the future, it can't help but have a profound and lasting impact on the rest of their lives."
