On Thursday, December 12, 2002, the Eller College of Business and Public Administration and the College of Engineering and Mines will present the fourth annual Technology and Management Awards Luncheon at the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale. As you may recall, last year we honored the late Tom Brown who recounted the simple and enduring elements that defined Burr-Brown's evolution from a two-person operation in his garage to a multi-billion dollar enterprise that is now part of the Texas Instruments family.

This year the two Colleges will jointly honor Louise Francesconi, President of Raytheon Missile Systems, as Technology Executive of the Year for her contributions to Arizona's economic development. In this position, she oversees the multi-billion dollar Missile Systems business, consisting of 16 production programs, 18 development programs, and a workforce of 11,000 employees. Francesconi joined Raytheon in 1997 following the merger of Raytheon and Hughes Aircraft Company. As a 24-year veteran of Hughes, she held several key positions in the organization, including vice president and CFO and president of Hughes Missile Systems. She was a key member of the Hughes management team responsible for the 1992 acquisition of General Dynamics' missile business. Not only is Francesconi committed to Raytheon, she is committed to the State of Arizona. Under her leadership, Raytheon Missile Systems was awarded the Arizona Quality Alliance Governor's Award for Quality, based on criteria used in the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award program.

Additionally, each College will present awards to outstanding alumni. The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Craig M. Berge, president & owner of Berge Ford, and a graduate of the College of Engineering and Mines and Robert A. Eckert, chairman and chief executive officer of Mattel, Inc., and an Eller College graduate. This year's Distinguished Service Awards will be presented to Eller College alumna Frances H. McClelland, secretary and treasurer of Shamrock Foods Company and to College of Engineering and Mines alumnus Craig A. Goehring, chief executive officer of Brown and Caldwell.

University of Arizona's president, Peter Likins, will help present the awards. Serving once again as our emcee will be University of Arizona alum, the Honorable Betsey Bayless, Arizona's Secretary of State.

This Awards Luncheon, in addition to acknowledging the contributions these executives have made to Arizona, provides a networking opportunity for our Maricopa County alumni and friends. We would be honored if you would consider buying a table or serving as an advertised sponsor of the event. Should you sponsor a table, we would be happy to fill any seats at your table that you would care to make available for our students and faculty so that they might also benefit from the educational and networking opportunity.

Proceeds beyond the cost of the event will benefit a fund for Technology Management administered by both Colleges. This fund will enable us to initiate and strengthen programs designed to better prepare our students for positions in technology-driven companies and to enhance recruiting-related interaction among our students and corporate constituents. Additional information about sponsorship and table opportunities is included on the attached response sheet.
