Welcome to the
MIS Bulletin, sharing highlights of
news, events, research, people, and partners of the Department of Management Information Systems at The University of Arizona.

After a nationwide search, The University of Arizona’s Eller College of Management is pleased to welcome Paulo Goes as newly appointed head of its Department of Management Information Systems (MIS). The department has been ranked a top-five MIS program in the country by U.S. News and World Report since the inception of the rankings category in 1987.

“Paulo Goes is an exceptional researcher who will add to the luster of an already outstanding department,” says Eller College dean and Halle Chair in Leadership Paul Portney. “In addition, he was instrumental in the creation of a unique university-industry partnership with GE and will bring his experience in that collaborative program to bear in further strengthening our MIS program.” In addition to serving as department head, Goes will also hold the title of Salter Professor.

Goes comes to The University of Arizona from the University of Connecticut, where he developed a partnership with GE called edgelab, a business laboratory where University of Connecticut faculty and students work side-by-side with GE managers on strategic projects. Goes believes there is enormous potential to develop similar mutually beneficial collaborations between The University of Arizona and corporations. “The existing reputation and the potential for growth were the first things that drew me to the position when I considered Eller,” he says. “The best technical information systems researchers in the country are here and I am excited about the potential to leverage their expertise by building new partnerships.”

Goes is originally from Brazil, but has been in the U.S. for over 20 years. His current research involves measuring data collected from real online auctions to characterize buyer behavior and see how economists’ theoretical predictions bear out in the market. His research interests also include evaluation of emerging technologies and innovations, e-business, confidentiality and security issues, and database technology and management. He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computers and information systems from the University of Rochester; a B.S. in civil engineering from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil; and an M.S. in production engineering from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Goes’s appointment began in August, when the Eller College concluded a year-long search to replace Mohan Tanniru. Tanniru’s five-year tenure with the Eller College ended in 2007, when he accepted the position of dean of the College of Business Administration at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.
