Eller College hosts Global Impact Symposium

U.S. Congressman Jim Kolbe joins panel of experts to discuss global issues with students

TUCSON, Ariz. – April 21, 2006 – Where in the world is Chad? What effect does a trade deficit with Japan have on the U.S.? Inquiring students want to know.

Addressing the need for greater awareness of global affairs, The Eller College of Management at The University of Arizona will host a Global Impact Symposium on Friday, April 21 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in McClelland Hall. The event is free and open to all students.

The symposium will bring together experts from three different areas — economics, government, and private enterprise — to address how issues such as global trade, world economics, and political events affect students and the world around them. At the conclusion of the event, the International Business Student Organization will hold its annual Global Challenge in which high school and college students compete for $1,000 in prize money and gift certificates in a team-based, fast-paced quiz game.

United States Congressman Jim Kolbe headlines the panel of experts and will deliver the opening remarks. He is the current chairman of the Subcommittee on Foreign Operations. Joining Kolbe are Gerald Swanson, Thomas R. Brown Chair in Economics Education at Eller College and author of the Pulitzer Prize nominated book America the Broke; Arvind Singh, former International Finance Consultant for Citibank; and David Gantz, Samuel M. Fegtley Professor of Law and director of the International Trade Law Program at the James E. Rogers College of Law. The panelists will conduct lecture/discussions in breakout sessions throughout the morning and come back together for a panel discussion during the luncheon.
