Eller College to host second annual High School Ethics Forum

Interest in ethics education gains momentum among Pima County, Ariz., high schools

TUCSON, Ariz. – April 30, 2008 – Attendance at the second annual Eller College of Management High School Ethics Forum, scheduled for Friday, May 2, has doubled over last year. More than 50 sophomores and juniors from 15 Pima County, Ariz., high schools will converge on The University of Arizona to explore personal and professional ethics with Eller College students ― the Eller Board of Honor and Integrity ― and community business leaders.

“Ethics is a topic that has moved to the forefront during recent years,” said Paul Melendez, director of the ethics program and public policy lecturer at the Eller College of Management.  “It’s critical that people begin grappling with personal and professional ethics during their formative years. This will hopefully lead to a more socially responsible population of young adults and professionals.”

Students will be challenged to think about issues from many angles using three cases designed to raise awareness of the importance of social responsibility. The 2008 event will include in-depth discussions about ethical issues surrounding violent video games, economic feasibility of equipping school buses with seat belts, and gender discrimination in the workplace due to globalization and cultural sensitivity. After participating in the roundtable talks, the high school student groups will be asked to present ethical, responsible, and logical solutions for each case.

The event, sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers, will conclude with a luncheon and a keynote address by Patrick Kuhse, a recognized authority on business ethics with a compelling personal story.
