Beyond the Classroom: Undergrads Bring Digital Citizenship Program to Orange Grove Middle School

March 2012

Eller College students in the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity teamed up with Orange Grove Middle School in Tucson to create a custom program promoting online safety and digital citizenship — which they offered to 600 middle school students on February 17.

The program kicked off with a school-wide, high-energy assembly with music that drove home the event’s theme: “Do you ROCK online?” The ROCK acronym reminded students to “Read Over and Check for Kindness” before posting anything online.

Following the assembly, the middle school students broke out into smaller group sessions with grade-specific content. These breakout sessions allowed students to shift their understanding to a personal level and discuss how their actions on the internet affect their lives and the lives of others in real ways, and including topics such as cyber bullying, privacy, and the security of personal information.

“Overall, I look at our ROCK Event at Orange Grove Middle School as a huge success,” said Alpha Kappa Psi member Michelle Vock, who played a key role in the event’s organization. “I am so proud of how the assembly and breakout sessions developed. All of the volunteers worked diligently to create a memorable experience for the students that we hope will have an impact on their daily lives. I am passionate about the message of the program and hope when the students are online next, they truly Read Over and Check for Kindness.”
