Ashley O'Bryan '25 BA (Economics & Real Estate Development) was a Private Equity Intern at IMA Financial Group in Dallas, TX.

What was a typical day like?

On a typical day, I would get to the office early around 7:30am and spend the first 30 minutes to an hour reading the WSJ, responding to emails, and outlining my day. On a busy day I could have anywhere up to 5 or 6 meetings, so I'd begin prepping for those shortly after finishing up with emails. Some days I had the opportunity to sit in on client calls, attend client lunch meetings, work on due diligence reports for my manager, or spend time on 1 of my 4 major projects for the summer. Everyday was different which made going into the office, maintaining productivity, and learning that much more exciting!

What did you learn?

A really valuable skill I utilized throughout my summer was taking initiative and developing my communication skills. Throughout my first few weeks at the firm, I introduced myself to everyone in my section and asked to grab a coffee or lunch. Setting up 1:1 time with associates is a great way to build your network. I am a firm believer that one of the most productive ways to learn is through other individuals experience and advice. Also, showing strong interest, being personable, and preparing for coffee chats is something majority of associates greatly appreciate from their interns.

What advice do you have for other students looking for a similar experience, or advice for future students to be successful?

My advice to younger students would be to get involved early, be open to new opportunities, and set short and long term goals for yourself. Eller has so many resources for you to succeed and the more you put in the more you will receive. Joining clubs, finding leadership opportunities, and gaining experience through internships and externships will benefit you regardless of your specific career interests.

How did Eller prepare you for this experience?

My various mentors, professors, and peers within Eller consistently encouraged me throughout the application and interview process. Throughout my time as an associate on the Capital Markets track of the Wall Street Scholars Program, I was able to gain technical skills necessary for finance interviews, network with alumni and upperclassmen, and develop into a more well-rounded and professional version of myself. The amount of guidance and encouragement I felt from the Eller community made my internship search and interview process much smoother. I couldn't be more grateful to those who answered my questions, shared advice, and motivated me throughout this past school year.

Did you feel supported by the company or organization you worked with?

When interviewing with different firms, I knew that I wanted to be somewhere that was committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Throughout my interview process with IMA, DEI was a major talking point in one of my final rounds. My managers and all of the employees at IMA were welcoming, genuine, and encouraging throughout my time there. Not only did this help me transition into my role at the firm, but it helped me to recognize how important an uplifting and dedicated culture is within the work place.
